Epson Ink Cartridge Transition and Necessary Firmware Update

Due to the continuing chip shortage, Epson UltraChrome HD and HDX ink cartridges of all sizes will transition to a different design with new part numbers starting June 1, 2023.

This change affects the Epson SureColor P6000, P7000, P8000, and P9000 printers worldwide. To use these new cartridges, the printers require new firmware BEFORE installing the new cartridges in the printer or running out of ink in the current cartridges. For that reason, it is critical that all customers update their printer to the latest firmware as soon as possible.

Epson is committed to the quality and performance of its printing solutions and there is no chemical or formula difference between the old and new inks. The current ink cartridges have a chip that notifies the printer to send a low ink warning or to replace cartridges. The new ink cartridges will operate without that chip. Ink levels will instead be determined by an internal droplet count done by the printer. This measurement method may lead to an earlier indication of low ink levels than the previous cartridges. To compensate for this potential variance in ink level reporting, Epson America is lowering the end user purchase price.

What happens if a user doesn’t do a firmware update?

If a customer fails to perform the firmware update, the printer will not accept the cartridge once an ink cartridge with the new chip technology is inserted into the printer. This will include any new UltraChrome ink cartridge purchased after June 1, 2023.

What is Epson doing to make it right for customers?

Epson will be reducing the price of the ink cartridges utilizing the new technology to compensate for potential ink difference.

Can I continue to use older cartridges if I still have them?

Once the updated firmware is installed, the SureColor P6000/P7000/P8000/P9000 printer can accommodate both the older ink cartridge design and the new ink cartridge design.

Is there any change to the ink formulation inside the cartridges?

No, there is no change to the ink performance (formulation, rating, functionality, etc.) for the ink inside the cartridges.

Do I need a password to update firmware on the printer?

If a password was created for the printer within the printer internal web interface then that password is required to update firmware via a network connection. If the password is not known and if the printer is connected via ethernet, temporarily change the connection to USB and run the firmware updater to update without requiring a password. A password is not required for the firmware update if the printer is connected via USB.
