What Is RSS?

The Internet grows exponentially on a daily basis. How can you keep track of so many sources of information?. RSS is the answer.

RSS is a family member of the XML formats developed specifically for every website with fresh and frequently updated content.

RSS feeds are streams of data that offer a list of articles on a site or section of a site and update whenever new, relevant information appears online. Through the use of a news reader or Live Bookmark that processes RSS feeds, you can view headlines and article excerpts from multiple sources, all in one place. A few popular news readers are Bloglines, FeedDemon, Pluck or, for Mozilla Firefox users, the Sage RSS reader. Live Bookmarks are a feature of the Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox and Safari browsers and function much the same as RSS readers.

The RSS acronym is used for all these standards:

  • Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)
  • RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 y 1.0)
  • Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

The different programs that gather RSS content from different sources are called aggregators. Once you've chosen your program, follow its instructions for adding our headlines.Look for the orange logo on the web or the Live Bookmark icon in your browser's status bar.
